FAQ

BK Psych Frequently Asked Questions

  • Integrative psychiatry is a comprehensive mental health care approach combining conventional psychiatric treatments, including medication and psychotherapy, with complementary and alternative methods like lifestyle interventions, stress management, nutritional counseling, supplements, and sleep optimization. Integrative psychiatry does not advocate for an anti-medication stance. Instead, it emphasizes the incorporation of non-pharmacological approaches into the treatment plan.

  • I offer most appointments virtually through a secure video platform. You must reside in California or New York to be eligible for these virtual appointments. If you prefer, you can be seen in person at my Brooklyn office (located in Williamsburg).

  • The frequency of follow-up appointments is individualized to each person's needs.

Medication Management: If you primarily seek medication management, we will meet every 2-4 weeks after your Comprehensive Psychiatric Assessment. As your treatment progresses, we will gradually extend the intervals between appointments to once a month and, eventually, every 2-3 months.

Psychotherapy: We will likely meet weekly for several months for psychotherapy sessions (with or without medication management). The frequency of sessions will be adjusted based on your treatment progress.

  • Brooklyn Integrative Psychiatry is an out-of-network (OON) provider with insurance companies but you may be eligible for reimbursement if you have out-of-network benefits (typically included in a PPO plan). I recommend calling the number on the back of your insurance card to find out if you have out-of-network benefits. Please note that Medicare, Medicaid, and HMO plans will not cover your appointment costs.

  • At Brooklyn Integrative Psychiatry, we provide sublingual ketamine for suitable candidates engaged in ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP). This service is a collaborative effort involving a KAP therapist and our providers.

Primarily, we reserve ketamine for patients with little to no benefit from at least two distinct psychiatric medications or other mental health treatments, such as ECT and TMS. If you're interested in learning more about KAP, we recommend visiting Luminary Therapy.

  • I do not provide psychedelic-assisted therapy. This type of therapy entails a therapist being present with an individual during a psychedelic experience. Preparation sessions typically accompany this before the experience and integration therapy sessions afterward. While encouraging research is underway regarding the potential of psychedelics like psilocybin and MDMA for treating various mental health conditions, it's important to note that their use is still largely illegal and not yet suitable for standard therapeutic practice.
